How MultiMFA SMS (Cell) works: a dedicated mobile number with a real SIM receives an MFA code over the cellular network, MultiMFA securely relays the message, and authorized team members receive access.

How MultiMFA SMS (Cell) works

The workflow is the same sharing model as MultiMFA SMS, with one important difference: the inbound number is a real cellular line instead of VoIP.

Four-step diagram of MultiMFA SMS (Cell): dedicated mobile number, cellular MFA delivery, secure MultiMFA relay, and authorized team access.
  1. Step 1

    Dedicated mobile number

MultiMFA provisions a dedicated carrier-issued mobile number for your organization. That number sits on a real phone and SIM that MultiMFA secures from the provider—not a VoIP inbox.

  2. Step 2

MFA code arrives via the cellular network

When a bank, Microsoft, Amazon, AWS, or another service sends an MFA text, the code arrives over the cellular network to that dedicated number.

  3. Step 3

    MultiMFA securely relays the message

MultiMFA receives the inbound authentication message and relays it through the same controlled MultiMFA inbox used by MultiMFA SMS. Access is limited to people you authorize.

  4. Step 4

    Authorized team members receive access

Approved relay users get the code by SMS or email, and can view it in the MultiMFA web, desktop, and mobile apps. Planned support includes up to 20 relay users.

Why teams choose MultiMFA SMS (Cell)

A real mobile number, not VoIP

Your organization gets a dedicated carrier-issued mobile number. Authentication texts arrive on a real cellular network instead of a VoIP inbox.

Built for providers that restrict VoIP

Many banks, financial institutions, Microsoft, Amazon, AWS, and other security-sensitive services reject or delay MFA codes sent to VoIP numbers. Cell is designed for those workflows.

Same MultiMFA sharing model

Approved teammates still receive codes through MultiMFA web, desktop, and mobile apps. Planned support includes up to 20 relay users via SMS or email.

We procure the hardware and plan

You do not buy a handset or carrier line yourself. MultiMFA secures a real phone, SIM, and cellular service plan from the provider so the number stays dedicated to your MFA inbox.

Why Cell is better than MultiMFA SMS

MultiMFA SMS is available today, includes a free trial, and costs less because it uses VoIP. Choose Cell when VoIP is the blocker: a carrier-issued mobile number is more likely to be accepted by services that reject VoIP for authentication. You still get MultiMFA's shared inbox instead of handing teammates a personal phone. Compatibility with any specific third-party provider is not guaranteed.

Planned pricing

Cell costs more than MultiMFA SMS because MultiMFA has to stand up a real cellular line for you. For each Cell number we must secure a real phone, a SIM, and a cellular service plan from the provider.

  • $250 one-time setup. Covers procuring and provisioning the phone, SIM, and related equipment. The setup fee is separate from the annual service fee and is non-refundable once procurement or provisioning has begun.
  • $900 prepaid annually. Covers the cellular service plan MultiMFA maintains with the carrier, typically on a 12-month term. Cell is not sold month-to-month. First year is $1,150; renewals are $900/year.
  • No free trial. Unlike MultiMFA SMS, we cannot lend a handset, SIM, and carrier plan for a two-week evaluation.

Frequently asked questions

What is MultiMFA SMS (Cell)?

MultiMFA SMS (Cell) is a premium cellular MFA product. It provides a dedicated carrier-issued mobile number for authentication texts, then relays those codes through MultiMFA to the people you authorize.

How is it better than MultiMFA SMS?

MultiMFA SMS is the right product when a service accepts VoIP. MultiMFA SMS (Cell) is better when the destination service treats VoIP as a higher-risk number type. Cell uses a real cellular number on a real carrier network, so those providers are more likely to accept the number and deliver MFA texts.

How does MultiMFA SMS (Cell) work?

MultiMFA provisions a dedicated mobile number on a real phone and SIM. MFA texts arrive over the cellular network, MultiMFA securely relays the message, and authorized team members receive the code in the MultiMFA inbox.

What does it cost?

Planned launch pricing is a $250 one-time setup fee plus $900 prepaid annually. First year is $1,150; renewal is $900/year. There is no monthly option and no free trial. Pricing is subject to change before general availability.

Why is there a setup fee and no trial?

MultiMFA must secure a real phone, SIM, and cellular service plan from the provider for each Cell number. Those are physical assets and prepaid carrier contracts, so Cell cannot be offered as a two-week software trial like MultiMFA SMS.

Can I buy it today?

No. MultiMFA SMS (Cell) is coming soon and is not generally available for purchase. Request to join the limited pilot program and we will contact you with more information.

Will it work with my bank, Microsoft, Amazon, or AWS?

Cell uses a dedicated carrier-issued mobile number rather than a VoIP number, which improves compatibility with services that restrict VoIP. Third-party compatibility and delivery policies can change, so acceptance by a particular provider cannot be guaranteed.
